In her latest Forbes feature, author @MindaHarts, shared her inspirational views on Black women allies, building community, and excelling professionally.
Amplify each other’s voices. Promote each other’s work. Hire each other for new roles. By uplifting one another we can all reach the top, and make it easier for the next woman to follow in our footsteps.
I loved reading this because it reaffirmed our mission to amplify the voices of Black women in STEM! Check out the STEMpowered Women Podcast as we share Black stories and promote Black women.
Here’s a snippet from the article:
Reid: I wrote a piece called What To Do When White Women Are Not Allies At Work. Some of the feedback said that white women are not obligated to be allies for Black women. With this in mind, what are one or two ways Black women can be each other allies?
Harts: ….Two ways Black women can help each other is 1) Amplify each other’s names or products when we are not in the same rooms. And 2) Hire each other. For example, I was rebranding two of my websites. I intentionally found a Black woman designer to hire for the project. I told one of my teammates that I want to hire a Black woman and he found Romain McLean and I am using her for other web design projects as well, in hope that her work will be amplified to others as well.
… Community is everything. And the communities we build can be formal or informal. What I love about the opportunity we have right now to build community as Black women is the larger impact we can have to reach more women via technology. Being in quarantine has allowed us to connect with each other in ways we might not have in the past.
